Memphis Officer Shot by Colleague Leaves Hospital

Officer Byron Willis fired at a large dog inside a home on Nov. 8, but instead hit Officer Willie Bryant.

A Memphis police officer has been released from the hospital after being shot and critically wounded last month by a fellow officer.

Organized Crime Unit officer Willie Bryant, 32, was released Wednesday from the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where he underwent surgery after being shot in the back with a shotgun.

On Nov. 8, Bryant and other OCU members forced entry into a North Memphis house while executing a search warrant. Officer Byron Willis, 43, fired at a large dog inside the home, but struck Bryant in the back. Bryant was wearing a protective vest.

An investigation into the incident is continuing, MPD spokesperson Sgt. Karen Rudolph said Monday morning.

Further details on the shooting and information on the nature of Bryant's injuries has not been released. He was recovering in The MED's intensive care unit.

After the shooting, MPD Director Toney Armstrong said the incident appeared to result from a "split-second decision" made by Willis while facing apparent danger.
