Culpeper County deputy fatally hit a woman while responding to a medical emergency

A Culpeper woman was killed Wednesday evening when she was struck by a Culpeper County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to a call of a medical emergency on U.S. 29.

Mary G. Williams, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.

CCSO deputy Scott E. Yeiser was responding to a call of a medical emergency at approximately 7:22 p.m. when he struck Williams, who was lying left of the centerline of the highway, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler.

Yeiser was responding to a call of a person slumped over the wheel that came from the Reva area.

"It is still under investigation as to what led up to the crash and why she was where she was and how she got there," Tyler said.

Yeiser was utilizing his emergency lights and sirens while en route to the call, according to Tyler.

Yeiser has worked for the CCSO since 2002. He was operating a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria.

The Virginia State Police responded to the crash scene and Trooper B.J. Hobbs is investigating the incident.

The crash took place just two-tenths of a mile south of Route 740, Birmingham Road.

The CCSO and the medical examiner's office assisted at the scene.

U.S. 29 southbound was closed until 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
