Nov. 22--Two Maryland Transportation Authority police officers were struck by a vehicle on the side of Interstate 95 in Howard County during a traffic stop about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to Maryland State Police and an MdTA official.
The officers were conducting a traffic stop on a suspected stolen vehicle when another oncoming vehicle either hit the officers directly or hit their patrol car and forced it into them, police and MdTA officials said.
One officer suffered a fractured leg, said Derek Nunez, a MdTA operations technician fielding questions on the incident late Wednesday. The other officer was also injured, though Nunez said not seriously.
At 11:42 p.m., the Twitter account for the MdTA police union posted a message saying union president Shane Schapiro was at Maryland Shock Trauma Center with an injured corporal.
According to state police, the MdTA police were leading the investigation into the incident.
Nunez said police were investigating whether the driver who caused the accident was intoxicated.
The night before Thanksgiving is notorious for drunken driving.
The collision caused the two right-hand lanes of I-95 and the ramp onto Route 100 west to be closed, as MdTA and state police investigated the incident.
