Oct. 16--The New Mexico State Police officer who investigated the crash of two Ruidoso police motorcycles during the Aspenfest Parade Oct. 6 noted that "no enforcement action (was) taken."

The two officers were performing stunts on 2010 Harley Davidson Police motorcycles when they hit engine guards and foot boards near the Sudderth and Center Street intersections.

"This investigation revealed the following: Driver one and two were performing a motorcycle stunt called 'suicide,'" New Mexico State Police Officer Steven Chavez stated in his accident report.

The stunt calls for one officer to signal with his horn, then both motorcyclist turn and ride toward each other and pass close. Chavez reports the motorcycles were traveling about 10 to 15 mph and were too close together, causing them to strike each other.

The officers were able to maintain control of the motorcycles and get them off the street. Both officers, Chris Bryant and Jon Lund, were treated at Lincoln County Medical Center for leg and hand injuries.

The two police motorcycles sustained damage to the engine guards, footboards, brake pedal and saddlebags.

Ruidoso Police Chief Joe Magill said the motorcycle damage was covered by insurance and the motorcycles would be sent to Barnett Harley Davidson, where the police department leases the motorcycles, for repairs.

Bryant returned to full duty without missing any time. Lund is on light duty with his foot in a soft cast.
