Oct. 16--DELAWARE, Ohio -- Two law-enforcement officers were injured today while working the motorcade escort for first lady Michelle Obama in Delaware County.
Motorcycles from the State Highway Patrol and the Genoa Township Police Department crashed into each other about 4 p.m. on Rts.36/37, about 2 miles east of Delaware. Mrs. Obama was not injured.
The trooper and police officer, whose names haven't yet been released, were both taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, said Lt. Kevin Knapp, commander of the Delaware post of the State Highway Patrol.
The two motorcycles were both going east on Rts. 36/37 when the crash occurred, Knapp said. One of the motorcycles apparently slowed to check on a vehicle that had pulled over to the berm and was struck by the other motorcycle.
The Highway Patrol motorcycle ended up in the median of the four-lane divided highway; the township motorcycle went off the south side of the road, Knapp said. Investigators are still checking over the scene.
The first lady was heading to Port Columbus to fly to Cleveland after she had spoken at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware. Officers stopped to assist their injured colleagues and the motorcade continued to the airport.
