Oct. 12--A Telfair State Prison correctional officer was stabbed to death by an inmate Thursday night.
The attack happened about 7:30 p.m. in a dormitory area where about 80 inmates were being held, said Todd Lowery, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Eastman office.
Larry Stell, 46, died after the stabbing, according to a Georgia Department of Corrections news release. He'd worked at the Department of Corrections since August 2011.
Lowery said he couldn't say how many times Stell was stabbed. Stell's body was taken to the GBI's crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
Details on the circumstances leading up to the assault have not been released.
The inmate was examined but was not treated by medical staff. He has been transferred to another prison, where he will be held until he's charged with Stell's death, Lowery said.
Located in Helena, Telfair State Prison has the capacity to house 1,160 "close" security male inmates, meaning that it is a high security prison.
