Oct. 05--After more than four years on the lam, U.S. Marshals and Mexican law enforcement arrested convicted killer Edward Salas in Chihuahua City, Mexico, on Thursday.
Salas, 25, escaped from a Clovis jail in August 2008. He had been sentenced to life plus 56 years for killing 10-year-old Carlos Perez of Clovis in September 2005. Police said Salas and four others tried to kill Perez's brother, Ruben, at night after a dispute at Clovis High School. Instead, they fired shots and killed Carlos, who was sleeping in the same bedroom, one day before his 11th birthday, according to a U.S. Marshals Service news release.
Law enforcement was able to arrest Salas because of a Provisional Arrest Request from the United States, according to the Marshals Service, which will allow his extradition to New Mexico.
One of Salas' co-defendants, Noe Torres, fled Clovis before being prosecuted and stayed on the run for nearly six years until being caught -- also in Chihuahua -- in January 2012. During his time out of jail, Torres petitioned Gov. Susana Martinez for leniency and claimed his innocence. She declined Torres' request.
