Aug. 31--A former state trooper freed from jail last week and placed on probation is back behind bars after authorities said he violated that probation by drinking alcohol.

Circuit Court Judge Teresa Adams ordered Eric Paul Funk, 38, of Woodsboro, held without bail Friday until a violation of probation hearing Sept. 21. Adams allowed Funk to request a new bail review hearing next week but recused herself from it.

Assistant State's Attorney Jason Shoemaker said Funk failed to show up for a urinalysis Monday. Additionally, Shoemaker said Funk had contact with two sheriff's deputies while in an apparently intoxicated state and smelling strongly of alcohol since his release from the Frederick County Adult Detention Center Aug. 21, and that he admitted to his probation officer that he had been drinking.

Funk was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device. He was given credit for time served while he was being held without bail, but could face up to 30 years of suspended prison time if he is found to have violated the probation.

Funk pleaded guilty on Aug. 20 to attempted burglary, second-degree assault and violating a protective order.
