Aug. 29--RANDLEMAN-One of the deputies wounded in Monday afternoon's shooting in Randolph County is home from the hospital and the second one is undergoing surgery to repair a shattered bone.

Deputy Edward Slafky is still at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center because a bone in his right leg was shattered by a bullet, said Randolph County Sheriff Maynard Reid. The bone is being repaired with titanium, and he will still be able to go back on active duty when he's healed, though Reid was unsure when that would be. Slafky, 38, was also shot in the right side of his chest.

Detective Jonathan Chriscoe, 33, was released from UNC Hospitals Tuesday afternoon. He was shot in his upper left chest area, near his shoulder.

"The good Lord was looking after those boys," Reid said.

The pair was shot during a traffic stop in a rural part of Randolph County at about 2:30 p.m. Monday. Chriscoe recognized a 2005 Kia Rio, and the man and two women that matched the description of several break-ins that occurred in the Randleman and Asheboro area within the last week.

Chriscoe stopped the car at the on-ramp to U.S. 220 from U.S. 321 and asked for backup and Slafky arrived.

Jamey Ashley was sitting in the backseat of the car when the deputies approached, Reid said.

"When they asked him to get out of the car he started shooting," Reid said. "They followed protocol. If someone was intent on shooting you, there's not a lot you can do."

He confirmed the deputies did fire their weapons, but said they didn't hit anyone. Reid would not say the number of times their weapons were fired, or if one or both men used their firearms.

The two women in the car, Shaina Michael Perdue, 24 of Danny Bell Road in Asheboro, and Amanda Nichole Pyrtle Swaney, 25 of Vernondale Road in Greensboro, were arrested Tuesday.

Both were charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries and first-degree burglary. Perdue's bond is $250,000. Swaney was also charged with failure to appear on a misdemeanor and 10 other charges and given a $351,100 secured bond.

Ashley, 36, has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer in connection with the shooting.

After fleeing the car he led law enforcement on a four hour manhunt. He was found in a dilapidated barn on Dairy Breeze Drive about a mile from the car. A dog barked at the barn, alerting police that someone was inside. Ashley was unarmed when he surrendered to law enforcement, and there were no weapons inside the Kia.

A .40-caliber handgun was found in the woods about 100 yards from the car. Reid would not confirm the caliber of bullets that were used to injure Chriscoe and Slafky.

Ashley remains in the Randolph County jail on a $5.25 million bond. He is charged with more than a dozen other unrelated charges.
