New Mexico Motor Transportation Police Officer Robert Potter, 41, died Thursday evening after collapsing Wednesday near the scene of a tractor-trailer crash on I-10, reports the Las Cruces Sun-News.

Potter, of Alamogordo, was one of several officers staging in the National Truck Stop parking lot in Vado, directly across the site where a tractor-trailer crashed into another 18-wheeler, New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert McDonald told the media.

"Officer Potter was a friend to all in MTDP and many throughout DPS and the state of New Mexico," McDonald said. "As a proud veteran of the armed forces and a seven-year veteran of MTDP he will be dearly missed. Please keep the family of Officer Potter, his wife JoAnne and their son Matthew Duke in your thoughts and prayers," McDonald said.

Further information on services will be announced when available, according to McDonald.
