Indianapolis police fatally shot a man who was barricaded in a far southeast side home and threatening to kill himself, investigators said.

Officers were called to the 3000 block of Cassara Drive just after 2 p.m. Sunday on a report of an armed, suicidal man.

Family members said the man was arguing with relatives when he locked himself in a bedroom and threatened to kill himself.

Officers removed family members from the home and were preparing to turn the scene over to members of the SWAT team when shots were fired, police said.

"While SWAT team officers were setting up command and establishing the perimeter, shots were fired inside the residence and the suicidal male was shot," Indianapolis police spokesman Officer Anthony Schneider said in a news release.

The man, who was later identified as Beecher Hughes, 51, was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is still early on in the investigation and detectives are piecing together the chain of events," Schneider said Sunday evening. "Additional details will be provided as they are released by investigators."
