OCEANSIDE, Calif. --

A deputy district attorney fatally shot herself during a traffic stop in Oceanside, police said.

The shooting occurred at around 6:35 p.m. Thursday at Vista Way and Jefferson Street, just north of state Route 78, Carlsbad police said.

Escondido Police, in unmarked cars, tracked Trevino’s cell phone and located her driving in Carlsbad where they requested assistance from Carlsbad Police to conduct a traffic stop.

Trevino pulled into the Oceanside Shopping Center located at 2100 Vista Way and parked. She shot herself as the Officer spoke with her through the driver's window.

Trevino was employed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for 21 years as a Deputy District Attorney and was currently assigned to the North County Branch in Vista. During her career, DDA Trevino was assigned to various divisions including narcotics, gangs, and child support.

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis issued the following statement:

"It is with great sadness that the District Attorney’s Office learned of the death of Deputy District Attorney Christine Trevino. Christine was a dedicated prosecutor and valued member of the DA family. She will be missed by those of us who were her fortunate enough to be her colleagues for many years. Our hearts go out to Christine’s family, friends and co-workers at what is a very difficult time for all of us."
