TACOMA, Wash.

Tacoma police shot a man after they say he tried to run over an officer with his car. The wounded man's car then crashed and caught fire.

The shooting happened after an officer on patrol noticed a driver with his lights off Wednesday night at South 66th Street and Tacoma Mall Boulevard.

The officer tried to pull the car over but police said the driver kept on going at a slow speed.

The officer followed the car to the apartment complex where the driver lived.

More police responded to provide backup.

As the driver drove through the complex an officer on foot signaled him to stop.

Instead of stopping, police said the driver sped up and tried to run the officer over.

The officer pulled his gun and fired six to eight shots.

The driver veered out of control after being wounded at least once.

Tacoma Police Chief Donald Ramsdell explained what happened next, "The car ran into a fence where it stopped. The vehicle caught on fire, where officers were able to abstract him. We had medical aid respond with the fire department. The individual was transported to a local hospital."

The driver is alive, but his condition is unknown.
