INDIANAPOLIS --

An Indianapolis police officer was injured Monday afternoon in a car chase that prompted a standoff at a hotel on the city's northeast side.

An officer tried to stop a black Mercedes Benz in the 4300 block of North Franklin Road just after 3 p.m., but the driver refused to stop, police said.

The officer chased the vehicle into the parking lot of the Value Place hotel in the 9500 block of Pendleton Pike, where the Mercedes crashed into the building, police said.

The driver ran from his car and the officer gave chase, using a stun gun on the man, police said. The suspect fought with the officer, striking him in the head, police said.

"Hotel employees attempted to intervene to assist the officer, and the suspect appeared to pull out a high-powered semi-automatic weapon and fire an unknown amount of shots," said Indianapolis police spokesman Officer Kendale Adams.

Hart Summeier said he was with his Army recruiter, who is a ranger, when they saw the suspect crash into the motel and jumped out to help police.

"(The suspect) turned and saw the ranger getting ready to tackle him and actually pulled the trigger three times and the weapon misfired," Summeier said. "(The ranger) heard it misfire three times and then at that point he said the police officer Tased (the suspect), and then … (the suspect) turned and decked the police officer in the jaw."

Police said the suspect tried to carjack a hotel employee's vehicle before running into the building and barricading himself in a hotel room.

A SWAT unit was called to the area, and Pendleton Pike was blocked. Police evacuated people from the hotel, nearby businesses and a mobile home park across the street.

The officer was taken to Methodist Hospital via ambulance with a police escort. He was said to be in stable conditions with non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was injured in the incident. The man was still barricaded in the hotel as of 6:30 p.m.
