Georgia Sheriff Dies 10 Days Following Wreck

Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart succumbed Sunday morning to serious injuries he sustained in a cruiser crash after he was struck 10 days earlier.

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. --

Channel 2 Action News has learned Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart passed away early Sunday morning.

Stewart was involved in a serious car wreck 10 days ago.

The Sheriff's Department said on June 23, Stewart was driving his patrol car and pulled onto SR 1941 coming off of Moose Lodge Road, when his grandson struck his car at about 1:30 p.m.

Stewart was flown to Atlanta Medical Center where he remained in critical condition until his passing.

Deputies said the grandson, who is in his mid 20s, had minor injuries.

The sheriff’s department said Stewart had been part of law enforcement for nearly 40 years in Spalding County.

Funeral arrangements are still being made.
