MT. JULIET, Tenn. --

Three police officers are recovering Thursday morning after getting hurt during a chase overnight. The chase started just after 10 p.m. Wednesday night in Mt. Juliet.

Officers tried to walk up to a stolen car, but the driver took off and hit two officers.

A chase started but got too dangerous, so officers backed off. About 15 minutes later, they spotted the car again and started to follow.

The chase continued on Highway 70 toward Lebanon until it reached Highway 109.

Officers put down some spike strips and the suspect hit them. When police tried to approach the car, the driver hit another officer. They then opened fire.

The driver was hit several times with gunfire. He was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

The officers suffered only minor injuries. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now taking over the investigation.
