HOUSTON --

A Houston police officer was killed while investigating an accident on the North Loop, investigators said.

Houston police were investigating a crash near Yale Street at about 1 a.m. Sunday. According to investigators, the officer was on the scene of the accident when an oncoming motorist struck him.

The freeway was shut down when, investigators said, a silver Volkswagen drove past police barricades striking the officer.

HPD Chief Charles McClelland identified the officer as 38-year-old Kevin Will. The chief said Will was on the force for about 2 years. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.

HPD is now investigating.
