MESA, Ariz. --

A valley man was arrested for assaulting a Mesa police officer after he allegedly kicked the officer during questioning.

The incident happened early Thursday morning after officers were called out to investigate a report that someone pointed a shotgun at a woman, police said.

Two men walked out of the home on June Circle and were being questioned by officers when Rodrigo Ruiz walked toward them. Ruiz was holding a baby in his arms when he became verbally confrontational, police said. As he was being escorted away, he kicked a Mesa police sergeant and tried to punch the officer in the back, police said.

Ruiz was taken to the ground, detained and arrested for aggravated assault on police and the woman who reported the shotgun incident. The baby is fine. The female caller was also charged with giving false information.
