MONROE, Mich. --
Monroe police said they are looking for 35-year-old man who is accused of dragging a detective on the side of his car for nearly a mile on Tuesday.
The department said Detective Tyler Dickerson approached two men in the 100 block of East Front Street at about 11:30 a.m. to investigate what appeared to be a drug transaction. One of the men was standing outside a black 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo, the other man was in the driver's seat.
Dickerson became tangled in a seat belt when the driver decided to take off, causing him to hold onto the side of the car while the driver drove for three-fourths of a mile before stopping, police said.
"I was shouting at him to stop the car," Dickerson said. "He was shouting at me to get off the car. I told him 'I cant', I'm hung up.' He then replied 'Well then you're going to die,' and he hit the accelerator again. At that point it was ... 'Oh no, I'm going for a ride."
Police said Dickerson was able to free himself when the car stopped at the intersection of East Elm Avenue and Riverview Street.
Police have identified the driver as Matthew Scott Bertram, of the Frenchtown area of Monroe County. The Monte Carlo is a Dale Earnhardt edition and has the Michigan license plate of 6KGW59.

The department did not say if Dickerson was hurt.
