VANCOUVER, Wash. --

The Clark County Sheriff's Office held a public memorial for a K-9 that was killed in the line of duty.

Kane was 8 years old and served in the Clark County Sheriff's Office for six years.

Many K-9 teams from across Oregon, Washington and British Columbia arrived at the Clark County Event Center on Thursday to pay their respects.

Kane's handler and his family were also at the memorial to say goodbye.

Commander Chuck Atkins told FOX 12 that the K-9 units are extremely important to law enforcement and the community.

"The outpouring of support from the community is just fantastic. It shows that they feel the same loss that we do," Atkins says.

Kane died April 2 from stab wounds received in the line of duty.
