A Boston police officer escorting a funeral procession leaving a Roxbury church was injured yesterday when she crashed her motorcycle into a truck and the hearse as she attempted to move to the front of the cortege, according to police and a witness.

The officer, who police would not identify, was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital for evaluation of jaw, head and hand injuries. She was expected to undergo X-rays for possible broken bones, said a police spokesman.

According to an accident report, the on-duty officer was maneuvering her department-issued Harley-Davidson around the hearse as it pulled to the side of Dudley Street when she collided with a stationary truck in the oncoming lane and then struck the hearse.

"The officer hit the truck. The truck was stopped. She was trying to get through a narrow opening in the middle of the street and get ahead of the hearse. She fell off and landed at least 2 feet from the bike. She seemed like she was in pain," said James Pierre, who was in a limo behind the hearse en route to bury his father, Adius Pierre, 88.

The accident delayed the burial by about 40 minutes, Pierre said.
