CARROLL COUNTY, Va. --
Two students at Carroll County Intermediate School are in custody after deputies said two handguns were found in a student's locker.
Officials with the Carroll County School System said a parent notified them at 8:45 a.m. of the possibility that a gun might be on campus.
The school was immediately placed on lockdown, officials said, and officers from the Hillsville Police Department conducted a search during the two guns were found.
Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning described the guns as an automatic pistol and a handgun.
Manning wouldn't say if the guns were loaded but did say that shells were found.
Manning said their investigation revealed that neither of the suspects, who weren't identified, had plans to use the guns.
Carroll County Intermediate School is a school for eighth- and ninth-graders.
