Lowell police said the detectives were traveling east on Westford Street when a 2004 Toyota 4Runner traveling south on Pine Street ran a red light at the intersection and hit the undercover vehicle at 3:08 p.m.

The 16-year-old male driver of the SUV was cited for failing to stop at a red light.

Both detectives were taken to a local hospital for their injuries. The teen was not injured.
