SANTA FE, N.M. --

New Mexico State Police said a suspect was shot late Wednesday after stabbing a police officer in the abdomen.

The incident started around 11:30 p.m. when a two-year veteran of the force pulled over Ricky Gonzales for suspected drunken driving, police said.

When the officer tried to conduct field sobriety tests, police said Gonzales took off.

After a short chase, the officer was able to catch up with Gonzales. That’s when police said the officer was stabbed in the abdomen and then he fired his gun at the suspect.

The officer was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Gonzales is alive.
