RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. --
Authorities in Rutherford County arrested four men Thursday afternoon after they said the group fired on a sheriff's deputy during a routine stop.
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Department said a deputy pulled a car over that was exiting the Highway 74 bypass onto Ellenboro Harriet Road in Rutherfordton.
As the deputy approached the vehicle, authorities said the car's occupants fired multiple shots at the deputy. The deputy was not injured.
Investigators said the car then took off.
The deputy said one person jumped out early, and the three others ditched the car a short distance away.
After a foot chase, authorities said the culprits were captured in two locations: Soco Gap Road and Amber Lee Acres Road. Investigators said those locations are about a mile from the initial traffic stop.
Multiple law enforcement agencies helped in the manhunt.
Authorities said charges are pending in the case.
