An Indianapolis police officer killed in the line of duty on July 5 was remembered as a hero Friday.
More than 2,300 people gathered to honor Officer Perry Renn during his funeral at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, according to WXIN-TV.
A veteran officer was shot and killed after he and another officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect in an alley.
"Officer Renn recognized the threat and evoked his training. He recognized the threat to himself and the officer next to him and an unarmed female next to the armed subject. Officer Renn fought the good fight," Police Chief Rick Hite said.
Holding hand-made signs and waving American flags, community members came out to show their support for the officer and military veteran during the procession.
Renn was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery and honored with a 21-gun salute. At the end of the service, the American flag was presented to his widow.
