Purpose Statement:

(General Description) The Police Sergeant directs and oversees the activities of assigned Police Officers, Police Service Assistants, and Student Police Cadets. Under direction, the Police Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working, first-line supervisor and will enforce District policies, procedures, and safety regulations, as well as applicable local, Federal, and State laws and ordinances; oversees all department services District-wide as required; and performs specialized police, and other related work as required. The Police Sergeant will also review departmental documents and procedures and recommend modifications; communicate information and respond to inquiries.

Essential Functions:

- Directs and supervises department operations and personnel for the purpose of prioritizing projects and ensuring optimal utilization of personnel. Conducts evaluations on line staff, Police Service Assistants and Student Cadets.

- Participates in planning committees with district personnel and outside agencies (e.g. law enforcement, community professionals, disaster planners, etc.) for the purpose of communicating and/or receiving information regarding situations that may affect campus safety.

- Performs functions of other positions within area of responsibility for the purpose of ensuring adequate coverage of security operations.

- Recommends policies, procedures and processes for the purpose of maintaining campus security.

- Researches, develops and implements departmental and district policies, procedures and processes for the purpose of maintaining public and campus safety.

- Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties for the purpose of providing information, facilitating communication among parties and/or providing direction.

- Reviews crime reports, activity logs, etc. for the purpose of ensuring completeness and compliance with legal requirements.

Other Functions:

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Desirable Attributes & Skills Fluency in any foreign language is desirable.

Position Requirements:

PART ONE

1.) A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

2.) An Associate's degree is preferred.

PART TWO

1.) Current P.O.S.T. Intermediate certificate. (Current advanced and Supervisory certificates preferred.)

2.) Progressively responsible California law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer within the last three years is required.

3.) Must be able to successfully complete a P.O.S.T. Supervisory course and obtain a P.O.S.T. Supervisory certificate within two (2) years of appointment.

4.) Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff is required.

OTHER

1.) Progressively responsible law enforcement experience with a California Community College District, California State University, or University of California Police Department at the rank of sworn police officer or higher is preferred.

2.) One (1) year police experience in a supervisory capacity other than as a Field Training Officer is preferred (must have been off probation).

Working Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, manual dexterity and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 33% sitting, 34% walking and 33% standing. The job is performed under with some temperature extremes, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in varying atmospheric conditions.

Work Days/Hours:

Employees of Marin Community College District's police department work 40 hours per week. Shifts and assignments can vary, depending on the needs of the District.

Salary Grade: SEIU 666

Salary Range:

Salary range is $4,660.84 - $5,666.16 per month. Normal entering step is step A.
