SUMMARY: Corrections officers operate King County jails on a 24-hour, 7 days per week basis. Incumbents work assigned shifts, including days, swing, graveyard, holidays, weekends and mandatory overtime. Incumbents are responsible for booking, releasing, inmate management and security work within the County jail facilities and Work Release Unit. Duties are performed within an adult detention jail which is a secure facility environment requiring the ability to navigate ramps, stairs, opening and closing heavy doors and working in narrow hallways and confined areas with a diverse population. The inmate population includes potentially volatile individuals with emotional, mental health and alcohol/substance abuse problems.

Job Duties

  • Receive inmates into custody; input personal data on the computer. Sign off warrants, search inmates and property.
  • Record personal data on required databases, logs and files. Check computer for outstanding warrants.
  • Enforce rules and jail regulation according to standard operating procedures and applicable state statutes.
  • Instruct and manage inmate behavior, in accordance to jail regulations and procedures.
  • Respond to emergency situations and use physical restraints and physical force when necessary.
  • Summon medical attention for inmates and render first aid when appropriate on an emergency basis.
  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical or dangerous situations; handle multiple activities happening simultaneously; exercise good judgment under stressful circumstances in which working speed and sustained attention are critical to the job.
  • Assume responsibility for movement and accountability of inmates within assigned area of jails.
  • Assign and direct work on inmate workers and other inmates in the laundering, cleaning and maintenance of jail areas.
  • Oversee activities of inmates, including recreation, meals, educational classes, visitation time and counseling interviews with attorneys, social workers and other authorized personnel.
  • Operate control room; monitor closed circuit television cameras of jail and control all entrances, doors and gates within the jail. Watch for potentially dangerous situations and other inappropriate jail conditions.
  • Answer phone calls and relate approved information concerning inmates to relatives, attorneys, probation and police officers, and others.
  • Coordinate with district, superior, municipal and federal courts to ensure that inmates appear as scheduled for trial.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to escort and transport inmates to courts and other facilities or institutions.
  • Distribute inmate meals, mail, cleaning supplies, commissary requests and other items as required.
  • Release inmates according to standard operating procedures and established procedures for release, such as posting bond, payment of bail and personal recognizance, as authorized by the courts.
  • Process and maintain commitments according to established procedures.
  • Write detailed reports concerning any problem, observation or emergency situations or occurrences within the jail.
  • Restrain inmates and use force, including deadly force within prescribed policies, procedures and local, state and federal laws.
  • Provide excellent customer service including professional and respectful behavior and communication at all times.

Prior Experience Entry level Corrections Officers are not required to have prior corrections or criminal law enforcement experience. Requirements for Lateral Transfer Candidates:
Must be a current Corrections Officer who has passed an accredited State Corrections Academy; must have successfully completed current agency's probationary period as a Corrections Officer; and must have no break in service.


Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:

Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers:
An applicant’s criminal record, including all arrests, prosecutions, deferred prosecutions, “Alford” pleas, and non-conviction information will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification.

The following will be disqualifying:

  • Any adult felony conviction in the past the (10) years.
  • Any adult conviction for domestic violence (or lesser charge due to a plea agreement) in the past three (3) years.
  • Any adult conviction for DUI (or lesser charge due to a plea agreement) in the past three (3) years.

Drug Use Disqualifiers:

Used Marijuana in the past three (3) years (this includes using only once or experimenting, using for medical purposes, or using in other countries).

Bought, sold, offered to sell, possessed or transported marijuana in the past five (5) years.

Used, bought, sold, offered to sell, possessed or transported any of the following illegal drugs in the past seven (7) years (in our outside of the U.S.):

  • cocaine
  • opiates
  • hallucinogenic drugs (including PCP, mushrooms, or LSD
  • methamphetamine, meth, amphetamines
  • heroin
  • barbiturates
  • ecstasy
  • opium
  • steroids
  • oxycontin.

Additional Disqualifiers:

The following disqualifiers are reviewed on case by case basis:

Employment Disqualifiers: An applicant’s employment history, including any termination or leaving an employer in lieu of termination, will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. Discipline or termination for sexual, racial or other harassment or discrimination or leaving employment prior to the outcome of an investigation related to alleged harassment or discrimination will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification.

An applicant’s employment history and conduct will be thoroughly assessed including any illegal drug use while employed by a criminal justice agency, any terminations or discipline while employed by a criminal justice agency, and any intimate contact with inmate(s), former inmate(s), or detained individuals while employed by a criminal justice agency.

Dress Code: King County Jail dress code prohibits visible tattoos with the exception of tattoos on the arms or hands visible when wearing short sleeve shirts. Tattoos that are visible on the neck and head are prohibited. Tattoos that are obscene, gang related or racially insensitive shall not be allowed.

Also, due to safety and security reasons, King County Jail has strict standards on facial hair and length of hair. Uniformed staff shall be clean-shaven, except that they may have mustaches, which shall not extend below the lip line or one-half (1/2’’) from the side of the mouth. No other facial hair is permitted. Beards are not allowed, except for medical or religious reasons as outlined by Human Resources.

The King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention has contracted with National Testing Network to conduct a portion of our entry-level and lateral pre-employment testing for the position of Corrections Officer. Please submit your application online via Neo Gov. You will be notified if you are selected to advance to the next step in the selection process which includes testing with the National Testing Network (NTN). National Testing Network will process applications and conduct the written and physical testing. They will provide DAJD with applicant scores and DAJD Human Resources will contact qualified candidates for further processing. Tests are available at frequent intervals. If you do not have access to a computer, you may:

In King County there are two Worksource centers and five Worksource Affiliates in Seattle, King County. Worksource provides computers with internet access, phones, and fax machines for job search purposes.

Selection process: Candidates selected for this position must submit all required forms and materials, and successfully complete each of the following:

  • King County application for employment
  • Written examination conducted by National Testing Network
  • Physical Ability Test conducted by National Testing Network
  • Successful candidates will be contacted by DAJD to proceed to the department’s background investigation process. The DAJD Background Investigation process is a thorough and extensive process which includes, but is not limited to: completion of an extensive Background Investigation Questionnaire, employment references check, criminal background check, polygraph examination, psychological testing/evaluation, finger printing, interview and physical examination (pre-employment physical).

Veterans Preference: Candidates requesting Veterans’ Preference must submit a copy of their DD214 form via email to [email protected] to determine eligibility.
Post hire: Once hired, candidates must again successfully pass a physical ability test (PAT). The post-hire PAT is administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center (WSCJTC) which is required for admission to the Corrections Officer Academy. Candidates must complete the four-week Corrections Officer Academy, a three-week orientation, six weeks assigned to a Field Training Officer, and successfully complete a one-year probationary period. The background investigation is an ongoing process and may lead to termination of employment if adverse information is obtained during employment. All candidates must be able to participate in rigorous physical training at the academy and must be able to work with juvenile detainees in physical situations throughout employment. Additional details regarding the selection process are outlined below.



Additional information on physical testing - Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center requirements: All Corrections Officers will be required to pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT) upon hire. The physical pre-qualification process will include the following components:

  • Push-Ups (Complete 15 push-ups)
  • Sit-Ups (Complete 12 sit-ups within one (1) minute)
  • 1.5 Mile Run (Complete a 1.5 mile run within 18:17 minutes)

The physical requirement standards are gender and age neutral. The standard is set to test any person’s physical ability regardless of gender or age and all elements are completed in the same manner (i.e. all candidates complete straight-knee push-ups) Additional information regarding the WSCJTC requirements can be found at: https://fortress.wa.gov/cjtc/www/.
