Amidst their grief, the Levy family has undergone a long and grueling time period waiting for any bit of news concerning the identity of who killed their daughter. Though the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department has undergone a change in leadership, the department has continued to be committed to this investigation The fact that Chandra Levy was involved in an affair with a Congressman certainly has made it a high profile case and that fact alone can complicate matters due to the press attention and increased pressure that is levied upon finding the killer. Though the basics of an investigation remain constant, law enforcement officers conduct their duties as required and their job often becomes more difficult simply by the continual pressure and presence of the limelight. It was once said, though I can’t remember who by, that a civilized man can act like a barbarian, but a barbarian can never act like a civilized man. It occurs to me that the same might be said comparing leaders and managers. A leader can perform management functions, and often must. A manager - if that’s only what they are - is incapable of acting like a leader. Read the rest of this entry »

Recently I found myself in a conversation with a police officer discussing the difference between leadership and management. There is a HUGE difference and the success of a police department (or any business for that matter) can be predicted based on the strength of their leadership. Read the rest of this entry »

It was announced in yesterday’s news that the Senate had approved an $838 Billion stimulus package. This got me wondering and I had to share. The state of Virginia has put its marker on the map as being a political hotbed for politics these days. President Barack Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the race since 1964, and a great deal of attention has been focused on Virginia. Now, more than ever, Virginia is in the spotlight for the governor’s race. The Democratic candidates vying for victory in the state’s primary are being closely observed. The primary is expected to be intense. The three Democratic candidates—Brian Moran, a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, State Senator Terry McAuliffe, the former National Democratic Chairman, and State Senator Creigh Deeds, are vying for a final place on the Democratic ticket and hoping to be Obama-like change agents for the outcome of the state’s gubernatorial race. I was recently asked what my favorite movies are. The answer (we’ll discuss below) led into another conversation about whether or not the primary characters in the movies I like set good examples or not. That led into an entire conversation about the differences that can exist between right and legal, and wrong and illegal. Read the rest of this entry »

Although I am now (obviously) a member of the “media”, when I look in the mirror I still see a husband and father first, a cop second and a writer third. Editor? Yeah, I know I am but it’s not what I see. I say all that because someone recently asked me about some less-than-complimentary statements I wrote about the “mainstream media”. The person felt I might be being hypocritical since I’m a member of the media. Does what I said apply to me? Hmmm… Read the rest of this entry »
