Letting Go

It’s been my experience - and yours certainly may be different - that people have a hard time “letting go” of anything they’ve invested time and effort in. While most of us would nod our heads and agree that applies to things like personal relationships, how many of us don’t recognize that it can also apply to old assignments or previous jobs? And the bad part (for us) is that we simply can’t afford to keep investing energy into something we no longer have a reason to. Read the rest of this entry »

Known as America’s Toughest Sheriff, Arizona’s Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is no- nonsense, practical, and determined law enforcement leader. He does not placate criminals, pander to his critics, and he does not back down when threatened with inquiries, lawsuits, or tactics of intimidation by those who don’t agree with his practices or policies. Sheriff Arpaio is definitely no wimp, and he runs his department the way he sees fit. He does not allow himself to be swayed or manipulated by others who constantly find fault with his strategies and condemn him for his philosophy. Obviously, for the residents of his county, he has lasting appeal because they overwhelmingly elect him term after term. Read the rest of this entry »

Acrosst he span of the past two decades we have seen a strong evolution in police response tactics in reaction to various violent incidents such as Columbine, Beslan, Virginia Tech and now, Mumbai. Since I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and believe that every legally armed citizen should play a role in “homeland defense” I have gotten the same question a number of times from said civilians: how do we identify ourselves to the arriving police so we don’t get shot? Welcome to the Holiday (silly) Season. I know it started a couple weeks ago but it takes me a little time to built up holiday momentum. The holiday season is fully upon us. People being “silly” is a kind euphamism for people acting STUPID. Every year police officers spend countless hours performing duties related to said stupidity. And, if we’re professional at all, we do it with a smile and leave a “satisfied customer” with a cheerful holiday greeting. Read the rest of this entry »

Like so many of the things I read that aggravate me I received an email today that had me thinking. Now “thinking” and “aggravated” aren’t always in the same sentence but often my thinking about something ends up with me aggravated. In this case I just ended up curious and potentially confused. The topic: President-Elect Obama’s “civilian national security force”. Read the rest of this entry »

Holder as Attorney General

President Elect Barack Obama’s choice of Eric H. Holder, Jr. for the position of Attorney General is an outstanding one. Mr. Holder is an accomplished attorney with demonstrated achievements and highly regarded by legal veterans, like myself, who work in the law enforcement arena and criminal justice system. Despite any criticism that is now floating around concerning his alleged failure to prevent the pardon of Mr. Marc Rich, he likely was caught between a rock and a hard place–particularly if he was an “at will” employee at the time. It is highly probable he had to walk a fine line in the decision-making process and may not have been the ultimate decider despite being tagged as the recipient of blame. Read the rest of this entry »
