On October 23, 2008 exotic dancers from across the country converged upon Las Vegas with the specific intent to compete in a Sarah Palin look-alike contest at The Paradise Club and hosted by Mr. Jeff Beacher. The philosophy behind this idea was prompted by recognition of the fact that Ms. Palin had, years ago, competed as a Beach Queen and took home the Miss Congeniality Award in 1984 in the Alaska Pageant. How does your agency handle special patrols or the unique problems associated with Halloween? My experience with this has been a bit spread out and I was wondering if there have been any significant changes in the past couple of years. When I was little Halloween wasn’t scary beyond the costumes. Read the rest of this entry »

Poor Santa, also known as Michael Graham, is crying the blues over being dumped as the Santa at Tysons Center Mall in Fairfax, Virginia after his 18-year stint earning $175.00 an hour. Consequently, he has now hired an attorney and a public relations firm to try to get reinstated in his job. Read the rest of this entry »

A few years ago I created (because I was bored and thought it sounded like a really good idea) a new awards program for police officers. The program mandated highter-than-usual skill levels and, most importantly in my mind, set a requirement for mentoring.
Mentor: a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. Read the rest of this entry »

Aside from the dangers of men hanging out in strip clubs and, perhaps, stirring the ire of their wives at home, who are caring for the kids, while they are out gallivanting or single guys with roving eyes and without commitments - whose women in the wings may not like it but have no bona fide claim to complain - it might be hard to fathom how dangerous a strip club could be. One only has to ask Charles Privett, a 35-year-old patron of the Booby Trap in Pompano Beach, Florida. Read the rest of this entry »

So, as a firearms and officer survival instructor for the past almost 15 years, I’ve often found it interesting to discuss various outlooks on weapon preference, caliber, capacity and off-duty carry issues. Across the past couple of months we’ve run some polls to find out some of YOUR outlooks. Here’s what we found out with some commentary on how things have revealed themselves. Fort Myers, Fla., police say they’ve now identified three of the eight bodies discovered in a wooded area in 2007. The third man to be identified was Jonathon Tihay, who went missing some time in 1995 or 1996.
A drifter who sporadically kept in touch with his family, Tihay was never reported missing. That’s understandable. Tihay was generally unemployed, moved from place to place and engaged in petty crimes. Since most missing persons reports are taken where the person was last seen, his family probably had trouble nailing down his location. Read the rest of this entry »

In last week’s blog I put forth a short discussion about how this presidential election seems to be taking some odd twists and turns. I also put forth the idea that if the presidential candidates switched vice-presidential running mates the election would be entirely different. In conjunction with that blog Officer.com put up a poll question on the homepage. More than 1,000 people voted and I saw what I expected - but it surprised me just the same. Has brought change for the better.
The U.S. successfully implemented a missing child alert system that saves lives. By immediately getting the word out when a child disappears or has been abducted, law enforcement has untold thousands of pairs of eyes looking for the kid and any vehicle that may be involved. Just the other day I was involved in a conversation with a woman who comes from a distinctly different background than mine. The fact that I’m a caucasian male and she’s a woman of African-American descent points out the two largest, most glaring differences in how we would view the world. I’m not a minority in any way and she can claim “membership” in two minority groups. I really appreciate the fact that she and I can discuss our differences of opinion and neither of us gets upset. Our most recent conversation had to do with the current presidential election. Read the rest of this entry »
