Losing Your Toddler…

Isn’t the same as losing your keys. I don’t usually go off on people, but in the case of missing toddler Caylee Anthony, I’d like about 10 minutes alone with the child’s mother, Casey. What a self-absorbed, immature piece of work she is. And I’m not so sure that the rest of her family is much better. Who waits a month to report a missing two–year-old?

I can remember one of my toddlers slipping out of my grasp for a few minutes in a store. I was (rightfully) hysterical. By the time my child turned up safe and sound, hiding under a rack of clothes, playing a one-sided game of hide and seek, I had been through every emotion imaginable. So I have to ask this: Where is the emotion in this case?

Investigators must want to wash themselves down every time they come in contact with this family. I know I would. If my child vanished the first thing I’d do is say, “Put me on a polygraph.” I’d turn over my house, my car, anything they needed to rule me out if it would speed the investigation into my child’s disappearance. But the Anthony family has been way too coy about all of this. Casey, Caylee’s mother, has an attorney who said quite solemnly on a TV news interview that the public would understand why she acted the way she did when the time came. Uh – wrong answer there, Bub. A REAL MOTHER WOULD NOT CONCEAL EVIDENCE FROM THE POLICE. A mother who is culpable would.

There is a principle called Occam’s razor that I think applies in this case. Also known as the law of parsimony, it boils down to this: when stripping any issue to its bare roots, the simplest explanation is generally the correct one.

Taking away all of the mysterious promises to “reveal all” and legal mumbo-jumbo from the Anthony case, what is left is this: The child has disappeared, the mother behaves as if the hunt for the child is simply an inconvenience and the family waited for a month before reporting her missing.

While I don’t believe in jumping to conclusions, this is one conclusion that is all but inescapable.

What a beautiful little baby. How sad this whole thing is.

My missing person for this post is Caylee Anthony, who turned three on August 9th:

Current Responses "Losing Your Toddler…"

  1. Anthonys are NUTS

I totally agree with you. The entire family is absolutely nuts. I wanted to slap both George and Cindy Anthony . . . they shouldn’t deal with the media at all, they need to hire someone else to do so. They come across as PATHOLOGICAL LIARS themselves and threatening the media gets nobody anywhere. Casey is the monster HER family created. Unfortunately, the world has to live with this monster AND the family. They all make me sick. God Bless poor little Caylee Anthony.

  2. jyg

I agree as well - except I do feel for the Anthony’s I think they are crazy with grief right now and they don’t want to admit to themselves that Caylee is gone. They are just forcing themselves to believe Casey’s stories because to believe otherwise will be the most painful thing in life. Then they lose Caylee and Casey. Also, I think they are trying to appear as much on Casey’s side as they can in the media. Because they know she (Casey) is watching the news and has gotten mad at them for the things they said. Casey is the lying manipulative person - if anything the Anthony’s are guilty of being gullible. That is probably why Casey left in the first place. It sounded like they had had enough and so she left. They probably were hoping a good dose of reality would wake her up and send her running back home - however she has too much pride to do that - either that or something happened accidentally to Caylee and she was afraid to come home because she knew that she would have to face it. But it stands more to reason that she wanted to be with this guy and so she killed her daughter so she could A. Be with him with freedom and B. She didn’t have to admit her failure as a mother to her parents - she had too much pride to just give Caylee up to them - because that would have made her “look bad”

  3. The psychics thought Caylee was left in the car. Orlando, in June, could be fatal, fast! Makes more sense than anything this family has said. This is the ultimate self indulged persolality on the planet. Caylee’s Mom is a Psychopath. She demonstrates no guilt or remorse, like Caylee should be her Mom’s responsibilty.

  4. Chrissy

We have all seen what Casey really is.. a manipulative, narcissistic ,pathological liar, who probably capable of never admitting or even addressing what REALLY happened to Caylee. And I do feel for the Anthonys, I can not even imagine the grief they feel. But for them to live in denial, beleiving every lie that evil woman feeds them is beyond excuse. I for one know that if one of my children were missing and i didn’t have an answer MY mother would not only turn me in RIGHT AWAY but would probably beat me senseless until I fessed up - AND IM 33 YEARS OLD!!! Its time for the Anthony family to face reality,as hard as it may be. Stop supporting the person who took away your beautiful granddaughter.

I realy tink that if the car smeal like a dead body.I honestly tink that the child died in the car. I also belive Casey left Caylee in the car and that the windows were close and Caylee was not able to open the doors. I realy dont think that pizza left in a car for a couple of days would smeal like a dead body… Come on now!!! I had pizza I forgot in my oven for 3 weeks and it din’t smeal like a dead person…. I realy beleive Casey kild hey child. The parents of Casey act very weird also. I think they have someting to do with this. Also why would the grandma would of wash the clotes…. Very weird situation a Casey is a psycho person. I have 2 kids and I would panic if they would get kidnape…..

  6. wispy

I am dumbfounded as to why everybody assumes that an accident is involved. Some mothers do intentionally kill their kids, and I think this is one of those mothers who intentionally killed hers. She shed no tears and looked happy out on the town after Caylee’s “disappearance.” All of her lies - she is at the grandmother’s house to the boyfriend and had been stolen by the babysitter to police and her family. Accidents happen every day and people call 911 immediately, not 31 days later. People generally aren’t prosecuted for an accident. They are visibly shaken and crying on the local TV news and not grinning into a camera while out clubbing. Her callousness is appalling. Her friend says over the phone, if anything happened to Caylee I would die. Casey replies, you know I love you. She doesn’t say you know that I love Caylee. In another phone call she complains that all people care about is Caylee. Grieving mothers who have a missing child or a child that died in an accident do not respond this way. She is a cold-blooded murderer. If it was an accident, why not fess up now? She won’t because if the police were to find the body there would be evidence of intentional trauma. That’s why. My theory is that Caylee was beaten to death in a fit of rage by her mother. Casey’s parents probably told her to to get her act together and grow up after she stole the credit cards. I think she was angered by that tough love approach and took out her rage on her daughter. I think the police are throwing out the accident theory so that Casey will take the bait and tell them where the body is thinking that she could get away with just an accidental death due to negligence. She knows that if she was to lead them to Caylee’s body that her little body would reveal the truth of what really happened.

This whole case is glazed with munchausen by proxy on a family level. The mother and the family both have been very calm while pleading the heart strings of the nation despite the fact a now 3 year old toddler is missing. How many partents do I know, including myself, who would not be in hysterics over their little one ‘disappearing while at the baby sitters’? I can’t think of any myself. How many grandparents would have ‘information regarding the abduction of their granddaughter’ and withhold so much as a whisper as to ‘who’ that kidnapper might be? I know for a fact had my daughter gone missing and I was all laid back about it they would have strung me up and beat the gods honest truth right out of me. Perhaps all the calm is simply the calm before the storm which will occur once what really happened comes out.

  8. Andrea

Thanks for this article, like the rest of the country I have been following this story since day one. I can not believe that the police have not stuck her in a room and interrogated her like you see on TV until she cracks! Hopefully the truth comes out soon and I PRAY that somehow she is found alive!!! Casey is teh lowest of the low, piece of #&*(!

  9. Kris

One thing that I will never understand is when there are millions of people out there in the world who share similar opinions and animosity towards this childs mother, what makes one persons opinion more media worthy than ours. We all human beings who think and feel about this terrible story playing itself out in the media, and I’m sure we would all like to have a crack at Casey Anthony given the chance. But why does one person who may feel they have some sort of higher credentials than the rest of us use the media to voice their thoughts and opinions? When you cut to the chase and get right down to the nitty gritty they are speaking as someone who is no different then anyonelse that has a heart and a family they love. I am tired of feeling that there are people who need this limelight to get their face in the news, when the rest of us sit back frustrated over the situation and share the same opinions. We are all human, we all can think, feel, share these same thoughts but we do not need to put our face in the media to convey our frustration over this narcisistic brat of a mother. We all would love nothing more than to throw her into the general population of the prison and let the chips fall where they may. So in short ….I don’t feel that this person who wrote this column is any more important that the rest of us who have children of our own that we love and cherish.

  10. Paula

It appears to me like Caylee’s mother has a complete lack of conscience. So SAD!

  11. This individual has the mentality of a 10 year old child and as such has not developed the necessary emotional depth to feel any kind of real grief. I think the whole mother thing was a game where she was the star; maybe it got too real. How can ANYONE that dysfunctional be any type of nurturer. I too lost track of my 3 yo little girl at the zoo. Her disappearance in reality was only a few minutes but in my panic stricken mind (Adam Walsh, Samantha Runnion, Megan Kanka ad nauseam) if was an eternity. But, she had just chased after a duck. Any event, and as much as it breaks my heart I don’t believe that little girl is coming home and the person she loved and trusted the most is the obvious culprit.

  12. cincinnati

What I’d like to know is: What does this entire family have to hide? It appears to me that they are all covering for each other for “something.”
God bleass this precious little angel.

  13. Sociopath comes to mind. A person who is literally unable to feel guilt. Never. No matter what a sociopath CANNOT feel guilt. She will never develop guilt. Do research on Sociopaths / psychopaths (they are the same thing) Look at their patterns of behavior, self centered, charming, glib, lack of empathy, lying behaviors, manipulative and some more. This certainly fits with the so called mother who was more concerned about talking to her boyfriend than anything else. “Um…my boyfriend” as she says in her jail tape. She sickens me.

Its hard for me to feel sorry for the family at times. You report a dead body smell in the car then WASH the very clothing that smelled of death? You claim pizza with maggots was in the car? That’s a blatant lie. I’ve been around plenty of pizza left out (college days) and taken out enough garbage to know that pizza doesn’t retain enough moisture for a suitable environment for maggots…nor does it stink. It dries up. That was a lie.

From day one, Cindy was rude and terribly rude with the media. She continued and continues to talk about herself and “how tired she is” “how hard SHE is working” “how little sleep SHE is getting”. Take notice when you hear her interviews at how often she turns the conversation to herself and what all SHE is doing. This was especially noticeable the first few interviews she did on CNN and several other shows.

Note how many times she says “I” or “me”. I’m tired of hearing how much SHE is doing in this case. That’s the majority of what she talks about, is herself. And following up on tips without consulting or even notifying the police of the tips??? She’s not an investigator, what is she doing???

Even if they are innocent of any wrongdoing they are not helping themselves by their behavior in the media. And I don’t mean the recent “frustration” behavior, I mean the utter disrespect and rudeness she (Cindy) has exhibited from day one.

When I read your article I thought, these are my exact same feelings. You are dead on with your assessment. And unfortunately I am afraid the outcome of this is not going to be good at all.

  14. Charlotte

The whole family is psycho - I was supportive of Cindy in the beginning when she turned her daughter in, but lately they all seem to be hiding something. On the 911 call Cindy told Casey “No, I gave you a month”. How would she know it was a month exactly at that moment? If she was not hiding anything, she would have said ‘It has been a month already since Caylee has been missing”, not “I gave you a month!” I think Casey burned the body - perhaps that’s why she stole the gas cans. She deserves the police to beat the crap out of her to get to the truth. What a Monster!

  15. I want to know how well does Casey Anthony sleep at night? There are just too many things wrongs with this case. I know that law enforcement knows exactly how to handle these situations and you know they play their cards close to their chest and I trust them and their judgment. As far as Cindy & George Anthony goes; I wonder if they REALLY believe their daughter or are they going along with it as a charade of sorts. Maybe the investigators have asked that of them. OR….they truly believe that some wild gypsies have Caylee somewhere and they will find out where. That belief may be the only way they can stay sane. I all too well remember the Susan Smith case and how that played out. Caylee Anthony has my hearfelt prayers that she will be found safe and alive. Time & truth tell all!

  16. Robin

I totally agree with you.If this had been me that was doing something like this my dad would be kicking my butt till I told him where my daughter was.(I’m 45 by the way)Seriously they are being way to easy on this girl!! She needs to be put in a room with her mom and dad.Lock um in and talk this girl down till she just can’t take it any more.I promise you she’d start talking.I would stop till I got the truth. She knows where that baby is dead or alive.Casey need to be told that she will remain in jail until she’d paid back every last dime that has been spent on the search of this child.I hate to see people like this abuse the system.
Casey is spending way to much time alone to think of new lies..Stop pampering her!!! She either took that baby out to the airport to bury her or sell her. She’s right not to trust the local athurioty because they are not doing there job. It’s like Casey Anthony is running the show. Her lawyer needs to stop thinking about Casey’s rights and think about the rights of this child to be found..Put this monster in a room with a counselor. Some who knows how to get the answers.Perhaps Dr Phil. He’s a tough cookie and seems to be able to get people to talk..Each day that passes and Casey sits on her ass not saying a word when she could be helping find little Caylee. If her dad can get irreate at the press then let him turn that frustration to where it needs to be on his lying daughter. He wouldn’t be going through this hell if they’d get tough with Casey.

  17. Kelly

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I too have been following this since day one. I agree with Andrea. I know this is not a tv show but interrogate her. Make her squirm - so something. How can the authorities sit there and let her keep quiet? If it were up to me I would make her sit in front of a screen with pictures of Caylee morning, noon, and night. Maybe then the incompetent little liar would crack. It saddens me that so many people out there want a child and can’t have one - then you have Casey Anthony who has a beautiful innocent little girl and this happens??? I just don’t understand. I continue to pray for Caylee and by some miracle and Gods grace - she is found alive.

  18. Krystal

I agree with you! I to have a son that just turned 4 the day after Caylee… If I didnt know where he was, it would take me from the time a knew he was missing to the time is took me to get to a phone and DIAL 911, which would not be long AT ALL!!… Goodness, I too would love to have a word with her… Great Blog…

  19. Danny

The family does seem more than a wee bit dysfunctional, but I am not sure the rest of them are culpable. As I understand it, Casey was traveling for some/most of that month and therefore had excuses why no one else could see Caylee. The rest of them (the grandmother at least) was growing more frustrated and suspicious, which led to her police call. But it took her awhile to wade through Casey’s lies.

Casey, on the other hand, clearly knows much more than she is saying. Yes, it is possible she cold bloodedly (or insanely) murdered Caylee; it is also quite possible there was an accident of some sort. From what we are learning about Casey: she doesn’t make very good decisions. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it turns out she left Caylee in a closed car on a hot day for too many hours - and then made an unfolding set of bad decisions upon realizing her error.

  20. Joe

I too have 2 children and although they are both teenagers now, there was never a day in their lives that I would not give up every possesion I owned or even a lung or kidney to ensure their well being! She’s not a mother, she’s nothing but a f—— spoiled brat!!! This is one of those times that forces you to think if there is a GOD? Why bring this type of suffering onto a child who’s parent should be nailed to a cross for her sins!!!

  21. Farmer

I think Law Enforcement should show Casey some autopsy photos of a decomposed child and let her “think” it’s Caylee. Maybe she would crack if she thought they had already found the body.

  22. KrisKris

After reading alot of these posts, one thing that I keep seeing over and over is “What is this family hiding?” There is a theory out there on this right now that others seem to share and have started discussing it too on the internet. It starts off with a document that is circulating in which Caseys mother Cindy attempted to file for divorce in 2005 then recinded, This would have been right around the time of Casey and her pregnancy. Could there be a chance that some incestuous relationship occurred within this family and the mother found out? Caylee being a product of this conception? This would explain the divorce document, and the whole behaviour of the family covering over who the father really is. Perhaps the father, or the brother Lee? Also wanted to point out one thing that I noticed in the video they show of Caylee coloring in her book at the table. Maybe its just me but I do come from a medical background over 25 years, but the child does have some very repetitive, quick jerking movements when she looks from side to side and moves in this video. I may be wrong but it could possibly be some mild disability she suffers from genetically passed on. If she were a product of an incestuous relationship (hypothetically speaking)…could this explain the quick movements and repetitive behaviour I am seeing? I know others are discussing this possibility on the internet and if this is a reason that paternity on this little girl could blow this wide open. Might explain why everyone says the whold family is unified in covering for each other. Just speculation but it is being talked about in alot of other forums right now.

  23. Christine Gardiner

Bravo, I couldn’t agree more!!! Marc Klaas said it best, “I would have danced naked on the table tops to get the police to rule me out, so they would focus all the resources finding Polly”. It’s insane to think how can a mother not be going absolutely crazy with fear and grgrief over their missing child. And I don’t care if you know where she is, and then in the same breath, kidnappers have her. Is that better, than not knowing? And, who’s dead body was in the back of her car, and in 2 spots in the back yard? Isn’t anyone the least bit concerned about that from the Anothony family? This whole thing is ridiculous, and they’re letting this horrible, spoiled rotten mother get away with everything. I am a behavior expert for the BC School Program, and my professional diagnosis of Miss Casey, is she is a narcissistic, sociopath, with problems compulsive lying to anyone that will listen to her. Sad, people are playing into it!

  24. Elizabeth

I agree with Kelly and Robin also but there is a major problem. Now that Casey has a high priced attorney, the police cannot talk to her, much less interrogate her. They can only do that before an attorney has been hired. In my lifetime I have come across with people that are narcissitic sociopaths and they have no remorse or guilt whatsover. Cindy is very strange and quite narcissistic herself. When my son was two if he were missing for a minute I would be panic striken and if an catastropic accident had happened I would be catatonic for a long time, not out bumping and grinding the next week. I think we all believe the ending is going to be very sad.

Why hasn’t Cindy Anthony been charged with obstruction of justice for washing those pants?

I want to know why Casey and her parents are STILL running the show? Now Casey will be let out of jail and put in a safe house? WHY?!?!?

  28. Angela

It was painfully obvious the first time Casey was shown on TV being led in handcuffs out of a room, her entire demeanor was one of spite and indignation. Her tears we saw in the court room were no doubt a mixture of guilt over having to admit (only to herself) what she did to her little girl, and self-pity at having been (more-or-less) caught. I don’t know what to think of Casey’s parents, either they are deluding themselves, or liars like their daughter. May God help them all. I pray that Caylee’s body is found so that this insanity can end, and she can rest in peace.

  29. star

At the latest vigil for Caylee…

Cindy spoke about her faith. “I understand why my daughter is so calm. I understand why she is so calm, because I am there with her. I am calm because I get it. I cant do anything about it. She can’t do anything about it. I have to trust in God,” said Cindy Anthony

    **WHAT?!?!?!

  30. star

Padilla said he thinks Casey handed off Caylee to a friend, because she was trying to get away from her parents. He said he knows who has the girl and is giving them a deadline to turn her over before he goes after them. “They’ve got five days in which to bring her back and then we start actively pursuing our leads,” said Padilla.

    **is this for real?!?!?
Five days from when?! It keeps changing.

    just read this here
    http://www.cbs12.com/news/anthony_4709293___article.html/body_casey.html

    August 27, 2008 - 4:19PM
Results just in from the University of Tennessee Body Farm reveal that a body was decomposing in the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car, mother of missing 3-year-old, Caylee.
On Aug. 10, air sample tests were taken from taken Anthony’s trunk and sent to the facility by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
The Anthony family claims the smell, which was first described by Casey Anthony’s mother as “the smell of a dead body,” was rotting pizza.
This first sample tested for body decomposition. This test did not confirm that the decomposition belonged to a certain person, or Caylee Anthony, only that there was a decomposing body in the trunk.

**If it’s not Caylee…who’s body was in Casey’s trunk and how is Cindy gonna explain this one?

  32. star

Prosecutors have now offered Anthony partial immunity, in exchange for her admission that Caylee Anthony died as a result of an accident. The deal is set to expire in 24 hours.

    Now we wait again…

  33. star

This family sure is odd or is that sick?

Casey gets lost for over a month, misplaces her 2 year old daughter, lies, steals, smiles, waves, parties, borrows a shovel to do weeding, carries a dead body around in her trunk and refuses to say what she did to Caylee and where she is. THEN has time to toss on a “Have you seen me” t-shirt with Caylee’s pic on it before she is lead away in handcuffs?

Gramma has no clue where Casey and Caylee were for over a month(but can find Casey in a blink of an eye when they pick up her car from the impound lot), finds Casey’s car and says that it smells like a dead body was in it, washes pants that smell like the car, says the cadavar dogs were wrong, says the phone records are wrong, says nanny must have her since that is what Casey said, says that Caylee is alive and well, even when DNA says she is dead and was in the trunk of mommy’s car? Cant get straight the last time she actully saw Caylee. Says if there was a dead body in mommy’s trunk, someone put it there. She goes on to say Casey cant tell where Caylee is because the family will be in danger?

Grampa says that the kidnappers that have Caylee are being watched? Freaks out at people out in the yard. Finds stolen gas can(where is other can?) in trunk of Casey’s car, looks for an assistant and spokesman for the family?

I’m sure i have left out a bunch of things here, but Casey looks as guilty as they come and they all look like they are hiding something!

  34. star

Padilla then said in the upcoming weeks, the country will see some revelations in the case.

“When the FBI, who has got some of the finest labs in the world, comes back (with findings), it is going to shock the world over something Lee, Casey and Cindy have known since Wednesday when they released their preliminary findings,” Padilla said. “And also, the Dumpster located a mile and quarter away from the boyfriend Tony’s home is going to play a big part in this.

**I can only imagine what they are going to tell us! If Casey, Cindy and Lee(maybe this is why Lee has not said anything lately) already know this info, how can they continue this game?

well Padilla did say the info would shock the world.
I guess when the DNA is checked by an expert…if something odd shows up they can check Lee and there has to be something in the Anthony home to check for Caylee’s DNA.
That would just be another sick part to this sick story!!

    Here we go again:

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Eyewitness News has learned Casey Anthony will be bonded out of jail Friday morning. Two bond agencies, Macdonald Bail Bonds out of Kissimmee and Joe Von Waldner Bail Bonds out of Orlando, are working together to post the $500,000 bond.

The agencies each put up $250,000. At this time, no details are available as to why the two agencies decided to post the bond. Casey Anthony will be on home confinement and monitoring when she is released.

**Oh i hope someone watches Casey good. Will all the new evidence floating around i believe she will either disappear(with the help of her parents) or try to kill herself.
Why would these people want to help her?

  38. This case certainly gets more and more tangled as the days go by. But, as I’ve said in a column, I believe the police are doing what they are supposed to do: an investigation. They have to proceed carefully or risk violation of constitutional rights and that can kick a case right out of court. Better to do it right the first time.

Kris (Aug 15th) I have to tell you that your post was patently annoying. Who on earth said that the person writing this article is expressing an opinion more important than anyone else’s, including yours? Defensive much? What an absurd post, a bizarre subject to take a stand about when the discussion is about the probable death of a beautiful little girl. Welcome to the Internet, Kris. Anybody–including you, maa’m–can create a blog and express their opinions and have others respond to them. How ironic that in an age where the common person has a voice for the very first time, even trumping the major media, you’re sitting there whining about authors of blogs like these. Go do something useful, Kris. Then maybe you won’t feel so impotent and inconsequential.

  40. Mindy

Question for you, Carole-do you think there is any chance they will have enough evidence for a murder one indictment as opposed to negligent homicide or (shudder)involuntary manslaughter? My greatest fear is that this mutant, this soulless human-appearing shell, does not spend the rest of her life in jail.

  41. EAO

There are alot of opposing opinions regarding the air sample results from The Body Farm, many arguing that there was “only” 5 chemicals found that give proof of human decomposition. My question to all the naysayers: How much human decomposition SHOULD be found in a young mothers trunk? The answer, if you haven’t guessed yet, is ZERO. It comes down to SOME or NONE. The argument over “how much” is ridiculous at best.
