Mentor Police Officer Mathew Mazany was killed in an early Sunday morning hit-and-run crash.

MENTOR, Ohio -- Mentor police have released the name of the officer killed in an early Sunday morning hit-and-run crash.

Mathew Mazany, 41, was a 14-year veteran of the Mentor Police Department and was assigned to its patrol unit, Chief Kevin Knight said Monday during a press conference.

Brian A. Anthony is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence for trying to hide the truck after it was involved in the collision, police said. The 24-year-old entered a not guilty plea during his first court appearance before Mentor Municipal Court Judge John Trebets.

Anthony was denied bond.

The fatal crash happened about 1 a.m. as the officer assisted on a traffic stop in the eastbound lane of Ohio Route 2 near Ohio Route 306.

The officer was taken to TriPoint Medical Center, where he died.

Police say the vehicle that struck the officer was a dark, late-model Jeep Wrangler, with damage to its right front.
