Two Puerto Rico Police Officers Killed Responding to Hurricane Maria

Agents Ángel Lorenzo González and Héctor Matías Torres died early Thursday morning after they drowned while attempting to cross the Culebrinas River in a vehicle.

Two Puerto Rico police officers died while responding to Hurricane Maria last week.

Agents Ángel Lorenzo González and Héctor Matías Torres died early Thursday morning after they drowned while attempting to cross the Culebrinas River in a vehicle, according to El Nuevo Dia.

"It's a very sad fact. It is the death of two companions, a very difficult situation for all of us who work here," Lt. Carlos Peña told the newspaper.

González was a member of the police force for 21 years Matías Torres had been on the force for 22 years.

Both agents were assigned to transit during the emergency and worked from 6 a.m. on Wednesday until 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
