A Royal Canadian Mounted Police Mountie was struck and killed Tuesday night while helping a motorist change a flat tire in New Brunswick.

Constable Francis Deschenes was stopped on the Trans-Canada Highway near Memramcook assisting the occupants of an SUV shortly after 6 p.m. when a utility van collided with the officer's marked patrol car, according to CBC-TV.

Deschenes was pronounced dead at the scene, while two people from the SUV were transported to the hospital and later released.

The driver of the van was treated in hospital before being taken into police custody. Charges have yet to be filed.

Nova Scotia RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brian Brennan said that Deschenes's decision to help two people in an SUV change a tire, "speaks to the core of what policing should be -- involved in your community, looking out for people, taking the time to do those small things that would go a long way."

The 12-year veteran of the national police force was hailed as a hero in 2008 for saving a 26-year-old woman whose car was stopped on railroad tracks. He used his cruiser to push the car off the tracks, with only seconds to spare before the ongoing train would have smashed into the car and possibly derailed.

The crash is currently under investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
