DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema, and one of the world leaders in life protection materials and high performance fibers, introduced Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology, built on its Radical Innovation platform, the company's newest product development program. Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology combines breakthroughs in polymer science, next-generation fiber technology and unique uni-directional engineering to deliver up to 25 percent higher ballistic protection while reducing weight by up to 20 percent. Three companies – Rheinmetall Ballistic Protection GmbH, Point Blank Enterprises and TenCate Advanced Armour – exhibited applications that feature the first Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology products at Milpol 2013. These initial applications demonstrate the exceptional capabilities of this new technology and set the stage for future innovations in soft and hard ballistic protection. All Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology products are manufactured at the DSM Dyneema facility in Greenville, N.C.
DSM Dyneema announced an innovative light weight ballistic material for use in law enforcement and military protective vests. High performance Dyneema SB71, a unidirectional (UD) grade made of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber from DSM Dyneema, was specifically designed and developed for use in ballistic vests certified under NIJ0101.06. Vests made with SB71 combine lowest possible weight with the highest protection performance. The new material advances the protection level achievable with Soft Ballistic (SB) armor by building on a new technology platform first established with Dyneema SB51 from DSM Dyneema in 2010.
DSM Dyneema's Dyneema HB80 is a unidirectional (UD) composite that meets the joint US Army and Marine challenge to increase the fragmentation performance by at least 35 percent of advanced combat helmets. Dyneema HB80 also has the potential to provide law enforcement SWAT units with helmets offering existing protection at half the current weight. Dyneema HB80 addresses the requirements for Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH), a joint program of the US Army and Marines. Under the pre-launch prototype name Dyneema® X31, the product has undergone extensive ballistic and secondary-property testing by several helmet manufacturers. In testing, helmets made with Dyneema HB80 have demonstrated a minimum of 35 percent increase in fragmentation performance when compared to the helmets currently used by the US armed forces.
Designed for protective backing behind the body armor's strike face in a hybrid construction, DSM Dyneema's HB51 UniDirectional (UD)inserts for hard ballistic body armor provides ballistic performance and lightweight comfort. Inserts made with Dyneema HB51 are optimized to provide increased stopping power against multiple fragments at no additional weight. The fiber delivers an improvement of 20 percent in ballistic performance over HB2. This enhanced performance enables manufacturers of bullet-resistant vests to offer the best protection from today's new threats.

Dyneema SB61 has been chosen by American Body Armor, a leading manufacturer of branded products for the law enforcement market, for its select use in the new top-of-the-line FUZION protective vest models. Dyneema SB61 fills a market need for improved ballistic raw materials that allow vest manufacturers to achieve higher levels of ballistic performance while lowering the weight of body armor. Dyneema is an ultra strong polyethylene fiber. Dyneema Unidirectional (UD) composites are made of several layers of Dyneema fibers, with the direction of fibers in each layer placed perpendicular to those in the adjacent layers. This unidirectional configuration allows the energy transferred from the impact of a bullet or other threat to be distributed along the fibers much faster and more efficiently than in conventional, woven fabrics. These UD composites enable protective gear such as bullet-resistant vests to provide excellent protection and reduce the effect of blunt trauma. Dyneema SB61 also offers light weight and flexibility for maximum comfort and agility.
