BOERNE, Texas -- A Kendall County sheriff deputy was struck and killed by a car Tuesday morning on Interstate 10 during a traffic stop, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy Carlos Ramirez was struck by a black pickup while conducting the traffic stop near mile marker 533 at 7:30 a.m., Sheriff Al Auxier said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Ramirez had been a deputy at the sheriff's office since December 2016, Auxier said. Ramirez also served in the Army and was deployed in Africa before returning to work for the sheriff's office in April. Ramirez was married and had two children.

"I want his wife and his family to know that we're here for them," Auxier said. "We'll help them endure this tragedy they're experiencing today."

Auxier did not identify the driver of the black pickup and stressed that the investigation was still ongoing. Ramirez's partner and the driver, who was initially pulled over, were also hospitalized in the crash.

Ramirez's partner was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon, Auxier said. The Texas Department of Public Safety is examining the scene of the crash and assisting the Kendall County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.

"This is a reminder of the sacrifices that law enforcement officers make every day, every time they put on their uniform as they go out to try and make their communities a safer place to live," Auxier said.

Auxier was emotional as he delivered the news. It was the first line-of-duty death in Kendall County in "many years," he said.

"I guarantee this community will reach out and help the (Ramirez) family and they'll help us as well," Auxier said.
