Colorado Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Crash

A Las Animas County Sheriff's deputy and two civilians were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash.

VALDEZ, Colorado -- A Las Animas County Sheriff's deputy and two civilians were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash Wednesday night.

Deputies were responding to a possible domestic incident when two patrol cars collided with a vehicle that was heading in the opposite direction on Highway 12 around 8 p.m., according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

The driver of the civilian vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene while a child who was also in the vehicle later died after being transported to a local hospital.

The three deputies involved in the crash were transported to the hospital where one succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The other two deputies sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The highway was shut down for 7 hours for the crash investigation and reopened at 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

The names of the driver and the child and of the fallen deputy are are being withheld at this time.

The Colorado State Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
