Florida Sheriff's Deputy Critically Injured in Crash

Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Ben Zirbel was critically injured in a crash Sunday evening.

A Clay County, Florida Sheriff's deputy was critically injured in a crash Sunday evening.

Deputy Ben Zirbel was riding his sheriff's office motorcycle around 5 p.m. when vehicle pulling a utility trailer turned in front of him, causing a collision, according to a news release.

The 12-year veteran was transported to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition Monday.

The other driver was uninjured and has been very cooperative.

"On behalf of our members, and Deputy Zirbel's family, we say thank you for the incredible support of our community," the department wrote in a statement. "With thousands of messages being sent, we cannot respond to them all, but we appreciate every one of you, from the bottom of our hearts as we pray for all those involved."

Florida Highway Patrol has assumed the investigation.
