Rocky Mount Police Officer Christopher Driver died in a crash while on duty Saturday night.

A Rocky Mount, North Carolina police officer died in a crash while on duty Saturday night.

Officer Christopher Driver was traveling South on South Church Street around 10:35 p.m. when his patrol car collided with a Commercial Motor Vehicle in his travel lane, according to a news release.

The officer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver was hired by the Rocky Mount Police Department on February 5, 2013. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Police Officer on Aug. 26, 2017.

"The Rocky Mount Police Department is truly saddened by the loss of Officer Driver," a statement by the police department reads. "Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of Driver’s family during this time of bereavement."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
