A New Rochelle, New York police officer died last week as a result of a 9/11-related illness.
Officer Kathleen O’Connor was pronounced dead on Aug. 16 following a "long and courageous battle" after being diagnosed with the illness, according to a news release.
After the September 11th Terrorist Attack of the World Trade Center in New York City, O’Connor responded to Ground Zero to assist with the rescue and recovery efforts. She volunteered her time to help other first responders sift through the debris piles.
The 20-year veteran of the force was most recently assigned as the Warrant Officer in the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
"Kathy was an exemplary police officer, and will be sorely missed by those who knew her.," the department wrote in a statement. "The Department’s thoughts and prayers are with Kathy’s husband, Anthony Funigiello, and family."
