Welcome Mr. President

This past Tuesday, January 20th, our country welcomed in our 44th President: Barrack Hussein Obama. In my memory this presidential race, the campaigns and elections has been one of the most hotly contested. Certainly there have been heated debates and emotions have run high. The race has been over for months. Our new President is in office. It's time to set the rest aside. What does this have to do with law enforcement? Quite a bit actually. I've always believed that law enforcement professionals - to some extent - should lead by example. If we expect people to act rationally, then we should. If we expect people to act courteously, then we should. If we expect people to leave race out of our interactions, then we should. The fact that our country now has its first President who has a partial minority heritage will, no doubt, be leveraged by many... and not always for the good. For all that we need to step up; be professional; and in all of our language and action (in uniform or on duty) support the new President as best we can. Whether or not his Presidency ultimately turns out to be good or bad for the law enforcement profession is yet to be seen - and we may not know for sure until after another president has been elected. I didn't vote for the man. That said, he's MY president and I will give him the respect and support due his position. Will you?
