ATLANTIC, Iowa --

An Atlantic, Iowa police officer is cut with a knife Saturday night, then the person responsible stabs himself.

The Cass County Sheriff said officers were serving a serach warrant at a home in the city.

When the suspect approached the door, he lunged at the officers with a large knife, said Sheriff Bill Sage. One of the officers was cut on the wrist.

The suspect then ran through the home and jumped out a window, and the officers followed for about half of a mile.

The suspect was talking to the officers when he stabbed himself in the chest, said Sheriff Sage.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The injured officer was treated at the hospital.

The names of the victim and the officer have not been released.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will investigate the incident.
