An off-duty Prince George's County police office accidentally shot his mother Sunday, in the 8000 block of Girard Street in Glenarden, Md., according to police.
Officer David Cheatham made a call to 911 sometime after 3 p.m. Sunday after he accidentally shot his mother.
The six-year veteran, assigned to Patrol Services, was in his residence when he heard noises coming from inside the house. Fearing someone had broken in, the officer retrieved his issued firearm and discharged it when he encountered the person he thought was the intruder. After realizing the person he shot was his mother, the officer immediately called 911 and initiated first aide, officials said.
The officer's mother was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
She is expected to make a full recovery.
In accordance with police procedure, the officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
