Oceanside Chronicles – PD: Season 4, Episode 4

Jan. 27, 2016
When armed robbery suspects escape into the woods, mixed in among the employees of the business, SWAT and K9 have to search the woods while the squad works perimeter.

From last week’s episode:

The situation was a tactical nightmare.  There weren’t enough officers on the scene to search the building to make sure it was clear. There was no way they could chase after the employees that had run into the woods.  They needed SWAT on the scene about ten minutes ago and another ten or so officers for perimeter help.  With all the employees now in the woods and running like a bat out of hell, they would likely need a lot more than that if any kind of secure perimeter was going to be established.

Eddie’s voice cut over the radio.  “Dispatch, make sure we have a canine team coming in priority. Alert special operations with my request for a team to handle the search.  Get Unit 1090 out here.”  Unit 1090 was the Lieutenant and Eddie wanted him on scene.  This was a hairball that Eddie didn’t want to carry all the responsibility for.  Someone with a bit more rank could come out and take ultimate responsibility for what was done right… or wasn’t.

This week’s exciting conclusion:

“Unit 1094,” Eddie initiated the radio call.

“Unit 1094?”

“Unit 1094, have all units hold their positions.  Do not, I repeat, DO NOT pursue anyone into the wood line.”

“All units, all units: Per Unit 1094, DO NOT pursue subjects into the wood line.”

“ETA on SWAT or K9?” Eddie asked.

Before the dispatcher could say anything, the closest K9 team answered up.  “Unit K113, about two minutes out.  Have 1094 advise where he wants me to deploy?”

“Unit 1094,” Eddie answered, not waiting for the dispatcher to queue him up.  “Deploy to the rear of the business.  All subjects ran out the back door. Need the business cleared first and then track on your discretion.”  Eddie knew that having the K9 team track anyone out of the back of the business was a waste of time.  There’d be no way for the dog to identify who was who among all the scents that fled out the back door.  Trampled ground was trampled ground and the dog could just as easily track one of the employees as one of the bad guys… and there were a lot more employee tracks than bad guy tracks.

“10-4,” answered K113.

While waiting for the K9 team, Eddie made sure his units were deployed around the fast food “restaurant” and that they were all holding their positions.  There was still the possibility that the bad guys were hiding inside AND that they might have hostages as well.  Everyone was in their place and standing by.

Eddie heard a siren in the distance and knew it was a patrol vehicle.
