It was just another day on the job.  Eddie had gotten his sergeant’s stripes sewn on, and Max had enjoyed the formal promotion ceremony.  Even the Chief’s Aid, whom everyone thought was kind of an uptight twit, had acted cordially – and his congratulations to Eddie on the promotion actually seemed genuine.  The promotion had been held on a Regular Day Off (RDO) for the squad, so after the ceremony, Eddie and Ann hosted everyone at their house for a cookout.  Eddie felt duty bound to invite Sgt. Daniels, but everyone was quite happy that he decided not to show up.  Apparently, according to the semi-confirmed rumor mill, he was packing a trailer and put a hitch on his truck so he could go spend a couple months hitting all the best fishing holes around the country.  The same sources also said his wife wasn’t going with him and there was the inevitable speculation about whether she’d still be home when he got back.  The ugly truth, at the end of the day, was that nobody really cared.

Mike and Kyle showed up – the twin mountains of terror as the squad had nicknamed them.  Both were single and both were very careful to keep dates separate from squad events.  In Mike’s mind, the squad was family and you just didn’t bring some random date to family events.  Since neither man had a current serious romantic interest, they showed up sans women.

Bill and JP showed up but obviously not together.  Max paid careful attention to JP.  It was the first time he’d seen her off duty and the time she spent in the gym was obvious.  She liked to show it off too.  Her shorts weren’t TOO short but they were certainly well above mid-thigh.  Her cropped tank top was black and matched her cowboy boots.  Her dark brown hair was curly but captured in a ponytail and bounced back and forth as she walked.  Max noticed a tattoo on her shoulder and one that showed on her side between the bottom of the cropped tank and the top of her shorts.  Eddie caught Max staring and slapped him in the back of the head.  Not hard but certainly hard enough to get his attention.

Dave showed up with his wife, Cassandra, and introduced her as Cassie to those who didn’t already know her.  At just under five feet tall and bright blond hair, she came across as super perky to Max.
