A Blue Ribbon Panel on 9-1-1 Funding established by the FCC’s Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council (CSRIC) says the answer to whether the current funding state of 911 is adequate is no and in a lengthy report to the National 911 Program they explain why.

Not long ago I tested SIG SAUER’s 1911 XO in XO Black. This is an all stainless steel, all business, 45 Auto, full-sized 1911 without rails. It sports a generous beavertail grip and SIG SAUER’s durable Nitron finish. I’d like to say that testing this gun was eventful, but it wasn’t. The 1911 XO turned out to be a reliable, well fitted gun that instilled pride in ownership and confidence in use. It’s the kind of 1911 I like to own: Ready for duty but not too pretty to get dirty.

Big Data. It is a term that is as shrouded in uncertainty as the term “Cloud.” Yet, it is a term that demands your attention and understanding. Why? Because it is real, it is not going anywhere, and harnessing it may well be the challenge facing Twenty-first Century law enforcement. If you can understand Big Data and the technology used to efficiently utilize it, you will be better equipped to meet the data-driven demands of the new “social-media citizen". How your agency meets that challenge is fundamental to both short- and long-term success.

Any densely populated area with multi-storied structures is going to face decreased 911 wireless location accuracy, and decreased accuracy means people die. In fact, the FCC estimates that 10,000 people die each year because first responders cannot find them after they call 911.

While the property room in a police department is usually the sole overseer of evidence, the forensic lab—located either inside or outside of the department—shares this responsibility, too. The lab performs testing and analysis of evidence, and then documents findings. Without the ability to automate its operations, a forensic lab can quickly become overwhelmed and backlogs of evidence can balloon.

In historical debates regarding unmanned air systems (even going back to the hot air balloon), privacy is always the number one cited concern. It’s a legitimate concern, too. But does it warrant the level of fear-mongering evidenced in media and courtrooms? It’s time to take a closer look and ask: What could drones do, if used lawfully...and if everyone understood the same laws?
