Helicopters: Just How Safe Are They?
Police work and flying share many common elements. Both have accepted and inherent risks. Both require extensive training, both initial and in-service. Finally, both professions have an incredible dedication and commitment to safety.
The aircraft
The American author, Mark Twain, popularized a famous saying: "there are lies, damned lies and statistics." In deference to Mr. Twain, the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter has been statistically proven to be the safest aircraft ever built! This particular study included both airplanes and helicopters, and examined numerous factors including number of flight hours, number of landings, and accident statistics, concluding that the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter is indeed the safest aircraft ever built. Helicopters are constantly undergoing design changes and improvements in safety. Better restraint systems, crash attenuating seats and better personal protective equipment are just a few areas where helicopter manufacturers have made huge improvement. Engines, as well as other aircraft systems, are getting more and more reliable. We now have collision avoidance systems and other sophisticated and practical avionics that will rival any airliner in the sky. The helicopters of today have become sophisticated, and more importantly, safe. In addition to the pilot's daily pre-flight inspection, many agencies mandate a mechanic's inspection for aircraft to be flown. Finally, the FAA mandates inspections at certain time intervals as well as the retirement of certain parts and components at a fixed time.
