Sgt. Duane Downing was rendered unconscious after being hit shortly before 9:55 p.m. on U.S. Highway 95 while en route to a car fire in downtown Tonopah, according to The Las Vegas Review Journal.

The deputy was transported University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he remained in serious but stable condition as of early Tuesday morning.

Lt. David Boruchowitz told the newspaper that Downing also serves as the chairman of the Tonopah Town Board.
