Houston police officers shot two men Tuesday (April 9) in Waller County while attempting to arrest one on felony charges.
The officers located the 19-year-old suspect around 4:30 p.m. in the 45200 block of U.S. 290 in Prairie View, HPD Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said. The suspect was wanted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, theft and unlawfully carrying a weapon, he said.
An investigation led authorities to Prairie View, where a man and woman sat with the suspect in a white Dodge Charger. As authorities approached in marked and unmarked vehicles to take the suspect into custody, two men exited the Charger and shot at the officers, Satterwhite said.
One of the gunmen had a semiautomatic pistol that was modified to fire fully automatic rounds, he said.
Two officers returned fire, striking both men, Satterwhite said. Life Flight took the men to the Texas Medical Center, where they are being treated.
No officers were injured, but both police vehicles were hit by gunfire.
The Texas Rangers will lead an investigation into the shooting. The officers who fired their weapons — 3-year and 5-year employees of HPD — will be on administrative leave during the investigation.
